Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic

This position is aligned under the Engineering Service of the Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center located in North Hills. As an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic, you will repair and modify a variety of equipment and systems that achieve regulated climatic conditions by recognizing and determining the best method of correcting malfunctioning systems. Your duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Modify and balance various elements of systems designed to meet a variety of conditions; Install & recognize causes of faulty equipment and make repairs on domestic and commercial refrigerators, heating and air conditioning units and any systems; Perform preventative maintenance on systems that operate continuously; Install and repair large systems that provide cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering and circulation of air and heat for air handlers to boost temperatures; Troubleshoots systems and identify defective components; Use test meters, precision measuring instruments, and test procedures to identify components and parts requiring repair and replacement; Reassemble equipment and test for proper operations using voltmeter, ammeter, pressure gauges, and vacuum pumps; Use schematics, sketches, and drawings when installing and repairing equipment; Fabricate new parts and recondition old parts when new parts are unavailable (such as shafts, holding brackets, pulleys, and pipefittings) by using a lathe, grinder or other machinery. Experience:
A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note:
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
Physical Effort:
The physical effort expended equates to lifting and moving large pieces of equipment and material, maneuvered into and out of confined areas. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers, and chillers. Carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds, makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding and platforms where the parts of the system worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places. Work involves stooping, stretching, bending and kneeling are frequently for longer periods of time than usual. Working Conditions:
The incumbent is required to work outside on occasions when temperatures reach beyond 100 degrees Fahrenheit and in outside environments with heavy smog. The incumbent works in drafty air handlers and in cramped areas with low overhead. Uncomfortable face masks and protective gear may be occasionally worn when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants used in large amounts, electricity or any other hazards. Shall be required to perform Lock/Out Tag/Out procedures to de-energize sources of energy.
